On Sunday 6 July 2025, North Shields Fish Quay and Clifford’s Fort came alive for the annual Tynemouth RNLI Lifeboat Day – a vibrant, family-friendly event that celebrated the lifesaving work of local RNLI volunteers while raising vital funds to support them.
Event Highlights
The event ran from 11am to 3pm and welcomed hundreds of visitors to enjoy a packed schedule of seaside attractions, live entertainment, and community activities.
At the heart of the day were thrilling lifeboat demonstrations, which gave onlookers a powerful glimpse into the skills and teamwork of the Tynemouth RNLI crew. They staged simulated rescues using the Severn‑class ‘Osier’ and the D‑class inshore lifeboat ‘Little Susie’, offering a rare chance to see their life-saving work up close.
Visitors had the opportunity to meet the crew, chat with volunteers, and learn more about the training and dedication required to respond to emergencies at sea. Alongside the RNLI, the Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service was on hand with a selection of rescue vehicles and equipment, providing interactive displays and safety demonstrations.
Family Fun at the Quay
Tynemouth Lifeboat Day had something for all ages. The Fish Quay was lined with vintage cars and classic motorbikes, attracting crowds of enthusiasts and photographers. Families enjoyed a traditional fairground atmosphere with games and stalls, including coconut shies, penalty shootouts, ‘splat-the-rat’, and paintball zones.
There was no shortage of food and drink, with food stalls offering local favourites such as “kippers in a bun”, hot and cold refreshments, cakes, and sweet treats. Live music from local bands created a lively festival atmosphere, with performances throughout the afternoon.
A raffle and tombola added extra excitement, raising more money for the RNLI’s essential services. Children and adults alike had a chance to win prizes while supporting a good cause.
A Glimpse into Coastal Heritage
The event also celebrated the rich history of Tynemouth Lifeboat Station, which has been operating since 1789. The station has earned over 20 gallantry medals for bravery and is one of the busiest on the north-east coast. Visitors could explore displays about the lifeboat station’s past and present, learning how the station has evolved and the kinds of emergencies it regularly responds to.
A Community Coming Together
This year’s Lifeboat Day was more than just a fun day out – it was a meaningful reminder of the importance of community support for the RNLI. As a charity-funded service, the RNLI relies entirely on donations to keep its stations running, lifeboats maintained, and crews trained and ready to respond.
Tynemouth’s volunteers put their lives on the line to keep others safe at sea, and events like Lifeboat Day are essential to ensuring they have the tools and support they need. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone who attended, the 2025 event helped raise awareness and much-needed funds for this crucial service.
Final Thoughts
Tynemouth RNLI Lifeboat Day 2025 was a true celebration of coastal resilience, community spirit, and local pride. With heart-stopping demos, traditional games, and a welcoming atmosphere, it brought together families, supporters, and volunteers in a joyful show of solidarity.
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, or helped to organise the day. Your support helps the RNLI continue its mission to save lives at sea. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!
